The Rain Catchers

This book makes me think about the definition of family. Do you think Gray lives with her family?

Why do you think the author frequently refers to the concept every story has a beginning, a middle, and an end?

Have you noted any symbols in this story?

  1. I think that Gray lives with her definition of family, though she doesn't live with her parents (yet?), because she loves it there, and loves who she lives with for the most part. I feel really bad for her because she has to live with her mom and start over in a whole new environment.
Something that I noticed that wasn't a symbol was that they mentioned Puget Sound, which reminded me of Runner by Carl Deuker. :)

  3. Hey Livi & Paige & Mrs. R,
I love the book you are reading. It's so gentle and lovely. My definition of family is much more like Gray's. To me, family is the people who surround and support you...not just those who are related to you. I don't have the best biological family, but my true family - made up of my dear friends - is the best.

  4. I agree with Ms. Walton too, if you all love and would support each other for anything, you're family, you don't need to be 'blood related'. :)

  5. i really like the book so far its really good but i felt bad for olivia when the grandmother died and olivia was so close to her and the night she died was the night olivia went on the date with that boy and she did not want to go but she did anyway but she knew olivia was going to probably die that but her other mother and aunts wanted her to leave that night so she would not be in the room with the grand mother when she passed away so olivia would not feel like it was her fault if the grandmother died while she was in the room

  6. I thought it was the other way around; Olivia died, and before she died, Belle looked after her alot, and they were all quite close to Olivia, and when the book started, they were all sure that Olivia would die in the near future. Gray kept telling herself that Olivia was going to be alright, though she was just trying to deceive herself. :]

  7. i also felt bad for olivia when her other grand mothers and aunts and stuff planed a date with the boy she liked with out even asking her and the boy made it sound like he was asking her out but it was already planed and olivia believed him but then later on he told her that it was already pre planed and i think i would be pretty embaressing to me if that happened cause i would think that the boy would think your being desperate if your relatives planed at date for you with out the boy asking you

  8. Hi Paige! I think sometimes when you wrote Olivia, you meant to write Gray.
Gray is the young girl who went on the date with Aaron.
Olivia is the woman who died.
"Grandmother" is still alive. Gray's mother is the grandmother's daughter.

    I hope this helps. : )

  9. ok well through chapter 9 through 12 a lot happened and the parts were i was really hooked on were when the dancer guy came to her house with the gun and said i have what you want that really freaked me out that he followed her home and basiclly stalked her. i think he is up to know good and is going to do something bad like break into the house or kiddnap her intill she buys the gun from him that she requested. i really want to find out what happens to her so the next stoping point for us is chapter 16 so by then i hope something happens but i hope she does not get hurt.

  10. There is one character i feel really bad for colleen because her dad is really mean to her and always bossing her around i know thats what parents do but he is like super mean in the begining of the chapter or maybe in the middle he was really harsh when he pulled in their driveway yelled at colleen and grabbed her and dragged her to the car i think that is really mean to do

  11. i think when the author refers to a begining middle and a end she means like every life has a story and it means like when they were younger the adventures they went on always started like a story i also think its a way of making tea time last longer and just having family time together i think a symbol in the story is at her grandmothers house in the woods near that log she always sits on and thinks about love and whats she going to do about boys her mom just a place in the book were she goes a lot when things are overwhelming to her a place to get away
